She stayed in the northeast for her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego with a B.S. in Meteorology. Just a few days after graduation, she made the cross country move to Colorado Springs, CO to begin her career at KKTV, the CBS affiliate. Lucy has covered historic blizzards, tornadoes, windstorms, the largest wildfires in Colorado state history and dust storms ... they truly "get it all" in Colorado! Above - Moore, Oklahoma tornado damage in May 1999 (Photo: NWS Norman)May 3rd marks the anniversary of a deadly F5 tornado that struck Bridge Creek, Moore, and Oklahoma City, OK in 1999. This year is the 25th anniversary of the historic storm that was on the ground for 38 miles, carving a path of destruction from Chickasha through the southern suburbs of Oklahoma City. Sadly, this one storm left 46 people dead and 800 injured. Over 8,000 homes were destroyed as a result of the EF-5 tornado. The tornado messaging was a first of its kind too, when NWS Norman issued a "tornado emergency" to grab the Public's attention beyond a typical "tornado warning" <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/track-1714753651978.jpg">The tornado cut a path through communities 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile wide. It wiped out entire communities in the Oklahoma City metro. Though the Bridge Creek-Moore tornado was the strongest storm as an F5 there were an additional two F4 tornadoes in central Oklahoma. Six more tornadoes were F3! According to the National Weather Service in Norman, OK, "The final total of 72 tornadoes makes May 3-4, 1999 event the largest outbreak of tornadoes for Oklahoma since official records began in 1950." <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/norman-1714753745770.jpg">Above - Moore, Oklahoma tornado damage in May 1999 (Photo: NWS Norman)This tornado was one of 74 that touched down on May 3, 1999, in Oklahoma and Kansas. Five deaths, 100 injuries and heavy damage were reported from the Wichita, Kansas metro area. For Oklahoma, the majority of deaths from the tornado outbreak occurred as a result of the Bridge-Creek Moore F5, a total of 36 with over 580 injured by the storm. In modern U.S. history, there have only been 59 F5 or EF5 tornadoes, most recently in Moore, OK in 2013. The Fujita (F) scale transitioned to the "Enhanced Fujita" scale (EF) in 2007. According to the<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weather.gov/tae/ef_scale#:~:text=The%20EF%20Scale%20takes%20into,type%2C%20structures%2C%20and%20trees."> National Weather Service</a>, "The EF Scale takes into account more variables than the original F Scale did when assigning a wind speed rating to a tornado. The EF Scale incorporates 28 damage indicators (DIs) such as building type, structures, and trees." There are 8 degrees of damage for each indicator to help survey crews determine storm extent and strength.

Welcome to May! The month normally boasts severe storms, Mother's Day and later sunsets. This weekend will be the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Saturday evening - and rain could affect things.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Summer countdown-1714568488325.png">A dynamic upper-level low will bring the shot at some storms on Friday to parts of the Ohio River Valley, but models are hinting at a fast moving wave joining the party late Friday night into Saturday. That could meet up with enough moisture to keep scattered showers around northern Kentucky into the first day of the weekend. This is where it could be raining around race-time (below).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/GFS for KY-1714568498978.png">The Kentucky Derby says on its website that it's a "rain or shine" event, so no delays are expected. However, the conditions could be a little muddy for the horses when the gates open Saturday at 6:57 PM ET.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/kentucky derby daypart-1714568509182.png">

Trotting Around Rain Chances at the 150th Kentucky Derby

More people die from heat every year than ALL other extreme weather COMBINED. So how do you know how hot it is it really going to be?&nbsp;The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA] and the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control [CDC] worked collaboratively to produce a new HeatRisk tool rolling out this summer from coast to coast. The tool had previously been used on the West Coast, but the 2024 summer will bring this experimental product to all cities across the U.S. According to Kimberly McMahon, the NWS Public Weather Services Program Manager, "HeatRisk is a great tool to just put into context, how hot it's going to be compared to what they're used to." The HeatRisk scale ranges from minor to extreme impacts and is color-coded from yellow to magenta. For reference, a MINOR impact day is your typical summer day.&nbsp;MODERATE days bring impact to vulnerable populations, especially people who are in the sun for long periods or without A/C. On these days, fans and open windows help to alleviate heat impacts inside.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/major-1713896597233.jpg">MAJOR impact days can be deadly for those without A/C and power interruptions are possible due to the heat stress. Hospitals are likely to see an increase in the number of ER visits due to heat-related illnesses. Outdoor activities should be shifted to cooler times of the day.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/mod-1713896597231.jpg">Finally, EXTREME impact days are for long-duration or potentially record-breaking heat events. There will be little to no relief from the heat overnight... and power outages are likely due to the stress on the grid. Outdoor activities should be canceled, and you should stay in cool spaces.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2023 during Phoenix's month-long stretch of 100°+ degree days, more people died in their un-air conditions homes than outdoors. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/xtreme-1713896597235.jpg">The HeatRisk tool incorporated heat forecast and historical data from NOAA to include: how above normal the temperatures are, the time of year, the duration of the heat, and overnight relief potential.&nbsp;It also considers at what temperature heat deaths occur for over 700 cities in the U.S.. That data was imperative in designing the tool to know at what level heat becomes deadly, unique to geographic location. For example, Phoenix's 110°, though hot, wouldn't be an "extreme" day during the summer. Take that same 110° but for Chicago? The risk becomes extreme. Look for the new HeatRisk product and temperature forecasts this summer on WeatherNationTV. National Park Week started Saturday, April 20th, and runs through Sunday, April 28th, It is a week to celebrate the over <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm">400 National Parks</a>! Throughout the week, parks will host events to highlight the unique nature of the parks, how you can volunteer, and the innovation happening across the country. National Park Week also encompasses Earth Day, on Monday, April 22nd.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/nps-1713740968123.png">At WeatherNation we spoke to some of the most popular, and lesser-known, national parks across the U.S. and highlighted them in our "Get Out and Explore" series.<h2>Catoctin Mountain Park (Maryland)</h2>This mountain park sits near the hustle and bustle of East Coast cities such as D.C. and Philly and allows people to explore the great outdoors and reconnect with nature. California)</h2>Sitting just south of Oregon, Lava Beds National Monument is surrounded by volcanos. Visitors can explore lava tubes ranging in difficulty from easy to expert. This gives people a chance to explore the “volcanic plumbing” of the region. &nbsp;<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6c0aGmAgC38?si=BPzHjKS7iBSK5K3X" start="0"></iframe></div><h2>Black Canyon of the Gunnison N.P. National Park Week: Get Out and Explore

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Monday, April 22nd - Earth Day!

The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) took a look back at the number of atmospheric rivers of the 2023-2024 season starting when the water year began in October.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Slide1-1712842543982.png">An atmospheric river is a concentrated plume of moisture in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that transports large amounts of moisture onshore. When the plume hits the higher elevations of the West Coast the moisture then falls in the form of rain and snow. Atmospheric rivers are responsible for large rain and snow accumulation during the Winter and Spring months and are essential for filling reservoirs on the West Coast.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-11 07-55-48-1712843811769.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>A total of 51 Atmospheric Rivers hit the West Coast this year, including two extreme events, one on December 5th along the Washington/Oregon border and another on January 31st in Oregon. Far more were the number of moderate atmospheric rivers that hit up and down the West Coast. This year the vast majority of landfilling ARs were in Washington, Oregon, and northern California, in part because of an ENSO neutral pattern where the Pacific Jet is typically aligned with the Northwest.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/ENOS-1712844476092.jpg">Though 2023-2024 had 13 more atmospheric rivers than the impactful 2022-23 season, this year brought a smaller number of extreme AR events and fewer to southern and central California (due to the jet stream track mentioned above). The 2022-23 season's few numbers of extreme AR events mean the state of California was at 200% of the average for precipitation. The 2023-24 season, though characterized by fewer strong and extreme events had plenty of weak ARs to leave the states at or slightly above precipitation for the winter months.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/AR scla-1712844476095.jpg">So what does this mean for California's all important reservoirs? At last update, reservoirs are at 117% of average state-wide thanks to slightly above average rainfall this winter and snowpack sitting at 111% of average state-wide. For the most up to date conditions on reservoirs and snowpack, you can visit California's <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://cww.water.ca.gov/">tracking page here</a>. There is concern for ground water supply, especially in the central valley where soil moisture is dry as of mid-April. Snowmelt in the Spring should help to boost those levels. According to the CW3E, "The strongest atmospheric river to impact Central and Southern California occurred on February 4-6 ... Downtown Los Angeles received 8.51 inches of rain, which was the second wettest 3-day stretch on record. This event was a great example how only a few strong storms over Southern California can make or break a water year." The heavy rain caused <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/major-flood-event-expected-in-california">numerous water rescues</a> around the city of L.A. with tornado warnings just east of San Diego. Mudslides and debris flow around the L.A. suburbs also closed roadways and created damage for neighborhoods. In the mountains, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/heavy-snow-in-california">impressive snowfall</a> came down in the Sierra Nevada!<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1754995886403518971" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1754995886403518971"></div>Another notable atmospheric river event was in early December 2023, when an extreme AR hit Oregon and Washington state. West Coast Wet Season Ending: Looking Back at Storms

First ... Solar eclipses only happen during a new moon when the moon and sun are on the same side of the Earth.&nbsp;Second ... The Moon's orbit around the Earth is a bit tilted meaning its shadow doesn’t always line up with Earth. For a total solar eclipse to happen, the Earth, Sun, and Moon need to be in a straight line with the moon placed directly between the Earth and Sun which happens only twice a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, its closer position to the Earth allows it to block out the sun when everything aligns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/setup1-1711639803722.jpg">Depending on the position of the moon, totality can vary in length. This year we will be dark for an average of 3 ½ to 4 minutes. How Rare are Total Solar Eclipses?

Carving a path from Del Rio TX to Burlington VT with the cities of Dallas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo all in the path of totality.&nbsp;<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/03/path-1711638247652.jpg">#2 This will be a total solar eclipse, where the moon blocks ALL the sun’s light. They are rippling waves of light and darkness that give a “movie-esq” effect.</li><li>No matter where you're watching from in the U.S., all of us will see some level of eclipse coverage. Instead of looking, up, turn your gaze down, and you’ll see tiny crescent shadows on the ground! Eclipses have been around since the beginning of time, and so have the legends that go along with them. We are bringing you some of the stories and cultural significance of total solar eclipses around the world in this WeatherNation web exclusive.In Ancient China, eclipses were believed to be a dragon trying to eat the sun, and people needed to make as much noise as possible to scare it off.&nbsp;The Chinese would bang pots and pans to try and scare the dragon away.For West African tribes, the Batammaliba people in Togo and Benin, the cosmic event is the result of the sun and moon fighting and trying to resolve their differences. They believed it meant that communities on Earth should come together and resolve their conflicts too.&nbsp;Indigenous tribes across North America have their eclipse traditions as well. Kit grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina outside of Charlotte, spending most of his childhood in Belmont, an old mill town on the Catawba River now grown into a bustling suburb. He had a passion for mathematics and science through grade school, having ambitions to become an architect, engineer, theoretical/astrophysicist, or geologist, but eventually choosing to pursue Meteorology. He went to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to obtain his degree, taking all electives on atmospheric sensing, tropical, and mesoscale meteorology for a full, in-depth understanding of the atmosphere (though he maintains on every hike, he should have taken more geology classes!) He interned at WCNC in Charlotte, learning the craft of presenting off-script and how to tell a weather story. After Graduation, he worked in the Quad Cities at WHBF-TV and KLJB-TV, the CBS/Fox affiliates. From there, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska at KSNB-TV, the NBC affiliate for Central Nebraska. The active winters and severe seasons kept him busy, experiencing a wide range of wild weather. He remembers the most impactful event in March of 2019, when a massive snowmelt, heavy rain, and blizzard all struck the state in 36 hours. Kit later moved to the Denver area taking a job as a Producer with WeatherNation. At 10:23am EDT Friday morning, residents in New Jersey felt some moderate shaking of the earth beneath them. A M4.8 Earthquake struck, with an epicenter in Northeast Hunterdon County, about 8 miles northwest of Bridgewater.<img src="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/realtime/product/dyfi/us7000ma74/us/1712331453719/us7000ma74_ciim_geo.jpg" alt="DYFI intensity map">Light to moderate shaking was reported to the USGS near the epicenter and in New York City, with very weak shaking as far as Baltimore, MD, Harrisburg, PA, and Springfield, MA.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/SOT_040524_TRT 0.26_RNE_LEHIGH VALLEY, PA_ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE VIDEO OF THIS GUY SAYING IT'S GONNA BE A NICE DAY THEN FREAKS OUT ABOUT EARTHQUAKE. CURSING REMOVED_SF_RICHARD SNYDER_NC_E040524-1712336556497.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Later in the afternoon Friday, an aftershock earthquake occurred in the same location and caused more shaking. The aftershock was a little weaker, but still registered a 3.8.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Earthquake-1712370819822.jpg">Earthquakes are not unheard of in this part of the country. In the 18th and 19th centuries, New York City has sustained damage from earthquakes. East Coast damaging quakes come out to a rough average of twice per century. In August of 2011, a M5.8 earthquake struck Northern Virginia, causing shaking from Georgia to New England, and even some minor shaking as far west as Chicago!East Coast earthquakes are less frequent than on the West Coast, but they can be felt much farther away due to the differences in the rock composition. According to the USGS, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred."<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VO_040524_RNE_MORRISTOWN, NJ_RING CAMERA CATCHES SHAKING FROM EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_JEREMY GODWIN_KW_E040524-1712336577279.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>There is still a chance for aftershocks, which are smaller quakes occurring after an initial shock. Statistically speaking, there is a 50% chance of another quake of magnitude 4.0, though that statistic is mainly used for larger earthquakes so aftershocks are more likely to be much weaker. Earthquake Jostles New Jersey

Colorado State University has released its outlook for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, calling for an above-average season for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. CSU Forecasters, under the leadership of Hurricane Researcher Phil Klotzbach, attribute the above-average forecast to the La Niña conditions expected in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and warmer than average sea surface temperatures in addition to activity from the West African Monsoon. CSU uses "analog" years, or reference years that show similar characteristics to this one; 2024's reference years are 1878, 1926, 1998, 2010, and 2020, all above average years. <video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/PKG_040324_TRT 3.50_CSU HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST_ROB BRADLEY_NJ_040324-1712238044793.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 every year, with the Eastern Pacific Hurricane season beginning on May 15. The National Hurricane Center begins issuing tropical outlooks for both basins on May 15. The first name on the list in the Atlantic is Alberto, followed by Beryl. CSU forecasters call for 23 named storms, but the official list only has 21 names. In the past, the National Hurricane Center would revert to the Greek Alphabet, but following confusion in the 2020 season. Now, there is an alternative list of names that span the alphabet again with the first three of Adria, Braylen, and Caridad.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/names-1712236967550.jpg">A La Niña is characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which interacts with the atmosphere to produce less shear over the tropical Atlantic. Less shear means storms don't get "pulled apart" and have a better chance of surviving in the Atlantic Ocean. The last time we were in La Niña was in 2022, a hurricane season that was above average.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/la nina outlook-1712236967549.jpg">The 2023 season was influenced by El Niño conditions which typically suppress hurricane season, but warmer than average sea surface temperatures balanced out the influence to give us a generally, average season in 2023.Sea surface temperatures are also a huge factor in this year's forecast. Warm ocean waters help to develop thunderstorms that then congeal into hurricanes. Climatologically, sea surface temps are at their warmest in September, when there are peaks of energy off of the coast of Africa.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/2024-04-04 07-19-57-1712237500749.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Remember, these are just outlooks and Klotzbach says, "it's important to realize that, you know, this is our first forecast. Historically, the skill is modest just because we're still quite a ways from the events we're trying to predict. Hurricane season doesn't really ramp up historically until August. So we still have a few months to go before the season really ramps up. Atlantic Hurricane Season 2024: Expected to be Well Above Average

A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the country of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, close to 8:00 local time (8 PM Tuesday night for the U.S. East Coast). Multiple casualties have been reported with hundreds injured. Dozens of buildings collapsed as the city shook.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/VON_040424_INTL_HUALIEN,TAIWAN_HOTEL SHOWING IMMENSE DAMAGE AFTER POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE_STORYFUL_DO_E040324-1712147940483.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The earthquake was located about 10 miles off Hualian on Taiwan's east coast and was about 20 miles deep. The quake even prompted evacuation advisories around Okinawa from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which they later lifted. Powerful Earthquake in Rocks Taiwan

Severe storms slammed the Midwest and Mid-South on Tuesday, producing widespread wind, hail, and tornadoes. The tornado surveys will be coming in the next few days as National Weather Service officials are able to determine the damage. Some of the more notable storm cells and tornado warnings from Tuesday that we will monitor include Charleston, WV, Louisville, KY, Lexington, KY and Sunbright TN. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775225434520563737" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775225434520563737"></div>On Tuesday morning, this student was caught in a storm and was completely knocked off their feet at the University of Kentucky. Winds were clocked in West Virginia and Kentucky at over 90 mph - that's hurricane-strength winds. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1775218786854982038" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1775218786854982038"></div>One of the more powerful storms was a tornado that tracked from Southeast Ohio into central West Virginia, producing widespread damage for communities on both sides of the Ohio River. Tornadoes Rip through Midwest Tuesday

The severe weather threat continues today as it moves to the east. This article has all the information on the risk today and tomorrow: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/midwest-at-risk-of-tornadoes-hail-this-week">Storms Shift into the Midwest.</a>The central and southern U.S. were pummeled by storms on Monday. Briar, TX, which is about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, TX, saw grapefruit-sized hail! That's about 4.5" in diameter! Even portions of Kansas dealt with baseball-sized hail.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/hail-1712056388862.png">Sights like this one were a familiar one across a handful of states. This video came out of Cole County, MO where a variety of hailstone sizes were seen from a severe thunderstorm warning. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1774981033563209765" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1774981033563209765"></div>We had multiple severe storm reports, with hail and wind being the most common ones across the board. Grapefruit Hail Pummels Plains, Midwest

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a HIGH risk for severe weather for Monday into Tuesday morning. This is the highest level of risk the SPC can issue and the last time a storm threat of this magnitude was issued was on March 31, 2023. We cannot stress enough how incredibly dangerous today's severe weather threat is. Please have numerous ways to get alerts, avoid traveling away from a sturdy shelter this afternoon and evening, and stay weather-aware. Numerous watches are in effect through the evening hours, this means all ingredients are available for storm development. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/severe alerts-1715016680312.jpg">An upper-level low-pressure system will take on what's known as a negative tilt where it is oriented from southeast to northwest. This feature typically means that a low-pressure system has reached maturity. With winds in this direction and strong southerly winds at the surface, this indicates turning of wind with height, and to put it simply: tornadoes.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/upper setup monday-1714906648335.jpg">All modes of severe weather are likely and will be extremely dangerous: long-duration, long-track tornadoes (EF2 or stronger), hail over 2" in diameter is possible and winds stronger than 75 mph (hurricane force). The threat of violent, long-track tornadoes will exist for areas mainly in Kansas and Oklahoma. Massive hail will be possible again, with some locations of the southern Plains picking up 4" diameter hailstones in the past week - the size of SOFTBALLS!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/dig threats-1715012391788.jpg">Our first few storms form in western Kansas and Nebraska midday Monday before developing into a line of storms that blasts through eastern Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, and Iowa Monday night. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma and southern Kansas, individual storms develop around dinner-time which will be our focus for tornadoes and damaging hail. Storms on the southern extent of our line will be individual through midnight when they congeal into a linear threat, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain to NE Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, and western Missouri through Tuesday morning.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-06 11-32-58-1715016809393.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Monday: Severe Storm Outbreak Imminent

As storm energy and moisture from the Gulf pushes in from the Central U.S., the severe threat moves eastward. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued severe weather outlooks through Thursday, indicating confidence in the environment to produce severe storms. During this stretch, severe weather threats are possible: damaging wind, large hail, and a few tornadoes. Related article: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/severe-weather-outbreak-likely-monday">Severe Weather Outbreak Monday</a>On Tuesday, the severe weather threat stretches from Arkansas through the Midwest and into parts of the East Coast - an enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) includes Columbus, Fort Wayne, and Dayton. Some of Monday's overnight storm complexes will move east into the Mid-South and Midwest first thing Tuesday morning with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes still likely. New storms develop later in the day as temperatures build, keeping the threat of strong storms around throughout the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday. The afternoon storm cells will be more individual meaning damaging hail and tornadoes are possible.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-06 11-42-42-1715018653509.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>With the newly issued enhanced risk, we recently obtained significant storm threats. There's a chance for a few large tornadoes, an EF 2 or stronger, from Fort Wayne, IN, and into Columbus, OH. The large hail threat is even larger in the pink coloring below, where 2"+ hail is possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sigtuesdayjpg-1715018593213.jpeg">On Wednesday, the threat shifts further south, impacting southern Missouri, Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, and northeast Texas. The timing on Wednesday looks to be almost a copy and paste from Tuesday. A few storms will be the focus for the first half of the day with additional storm development in the afternoon and evening along a cold front.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-06 07-29-01-1715002605995.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The storm threat continues to push east on Thursday with a large portion of the southern I-95 corridor highlighted for the risk of severe weather. Severe Storms Push East through Thursday

According to the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, 26.4" of snowfall was observed on May 4th, making it the snowiest day of the 2023-24 winter season! In Lassen N.P over 30" of snow fell with a fresh 26" at Palisades Tahoe ski resort. The late-season snowfall was responsible for tough travel on I-80 on the Donner Pass over the weekend. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1787160675728679277" src="https://twitter.com/UCB_CSSL/status/1787160675728679277"></div>Additional snowfall will continue for the western United States over the next couple of days. Widespread winter weather alerts have been issued for the Rockies, Tetons, Wasatch, Uintas, and Cascades. We expect most of our snowfall to be in the higher elevations of the mountains but there have been some reports in lower elevations such as Salt Lake City.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/winter alerts-1715010218204.jpg">An area of low pressure will produce heavy rainfall through central Montana and eastern Wyoming on Monday. May Snow in California, now Impacting Rockies

Preliminary data from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) suggests that April 2024 was the second-highest tornado count on record. This surpasses the average number of April tornadoes which stands at 182 touchdowns across the country for the month. The year 2011 holds the record of 757 tornadoes in April alone, and I am not the only one who is thankful we didn't see nearly that many.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/April Tor Comp-1714921143566.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>While many of these tornadic storms across the Great Plains may have been photogenic, they are responsible for excessive damage strewn across states like Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas.On average, Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas see the most tornadoes in April. Last month hit Nebraska and Iowa hard, which is not the norm this time of year.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-02-25 110543-1714921317847.jpg">May is known to bring the most tornadoes we see each year. Considering how active April was, it will be interesting to see how the upcoming month turns out. April Brought 300 Tornadoes, Second-Most On Record

As we head into the work week, a ridge of high pressure will dominate the Gulf Coast which could break some record high temperatures. The heat kicks off as early as Monday in the state of Texas where highs will run about 10° above average through Wednesday!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/high temps-1715010150933.jpg">Numerous cities across the southern tier could tie or break records on Wednesday - each pink dot on the map is a city that could tie or beat their record high for May 8th!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-06_rsc rse dots-1715021662425.png">Here are a few examples of cities that could break record highs on Wednesday afternoon. Potential Records Highs This Week in the Southeast

After multiple spots in southeast Texas received one to two FEET of rain in just 24 hours in the last week, many instances of extreme flooding are ongoing. Roads are washed out, rivers and creeks are running high with water still standing over roads in some spots, and major flooding is expected to continue along rivers over the next few days. This video was taken about 20 miles north of Houston, in Humble, TX. Please remember, turn around, don't drown.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1786848270972489808" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1786848270972489808"></div>More heavy rain and flooding are expected to close out the weekend in southeast Texas. A moderate risk (level 3 out of 4) is issued for Houston and Lufkin.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/05-05_through tonight wpc-1714938620711.png">This level 3 out of 4 on the flood risk scale indicates that numerous flash floods are likely, with some significant flash flooding possible. This area corresponds with the already-flooded part of the state with standing water and rivers still in a major flood stage (see top of page).<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/mod flood-1714904806947.png">The heavy rainfall threat will continue across Texas due to the oversaturation of soils. Flooding will be expected in areas of southeast Texas already hard-hit by flooding earlier this week. Never drive through flooded roads!

Flood Threat Winding Down for the Lone Star State

Despite seeing strong storms on Saturday, what seems like a never-ending severe weather threat is ongoing in the Lone Star State. Reports of a few touchdowns of tornadoes came out of places like Kermit and Fort Stockton, TX Saturday.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1786866266076041461" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1786866266076041461"></div>The hail that some of these severe storms brought was nothing to mess around with. Kermit and Randalls Corner had to deal with softball-sized hail throughout Saturday afternoon and evening.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-05 045825-1714906764420.png">The severe weather threat will be limited overnight in south Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Tornado Hits West Texas, Isolated Storms Tonight

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. It's the second day in a row cities in the northeast broke record high temperatures. Not as many records were broken Tuesday, but areas like D.C. and Binghamton, NY got high enough to break previous records. Temperatures will return closer to seasonal by Friday for many locations. Although, some spots do stay warmer.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-30 164300-1714516987092.png">Showers and storms swept across the northeast with multiple severe warned storms. We still have the chance of a few isolated severe storms overnight with the potential of strong winds and large hail. Record Highs Hit in the Northeast, Isolated Severe Remains

UPDATE: The National Weather Service out of Norman, Oklahoma, has upgraded the rating of the Marietta tornado to EF-4 with estimated peak winds of 165-170 mph, a path length of 27 miles, and a path width of 900 yards. Unfortunately, this tornado brought at least one fatality to Love County. At Least 33 Tornadoes Reported in Oklahoma this Weekend

Several teams of meteorologists and storm damage experts are actively investigating and surveying damage from Friday, April 26 across the I-80 corridor. According to the National Weather Service of Omaha, at least 5 EF-3 tornadoes have been confirmed.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/04-29 nws omaha-1714445003827.png">It all started when a tornado touched down in Lincoln, NE, just before 3 PM central time on Friday. This storm was tornado-warned for more than 50 miles as it tore through suburbs of the Omaha metro and eventually moved across the Missouri River and into Iowa. It has been confirmed as an EF-3 on the ground for 8.6 miles and with winds of 158 mph. This tornado struck Waverly, NE, a suburb on the NE side of Lincoln, where it derailed a train.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783955995875565622" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783955995875565622"></div>An EF-3 tornado was confirmed in Elkhorn, NE on the west side of Omaha. Winds were at 165 mph with this tornado. After the tornado moved through, our field crews observed high-tension power lines snapped in Elkhorn, NE, outside of Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784243608318595371" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784243608318595371"></div>There was a "tornado emergency" issued for the northern suburbs of Omaha, NE, at around 3:45 PM CT Friday as a result of the Elkhorn tornado storm cell. This is the highest level of tornado warning the National Weather Service can issue and signals that there is a confirmed tornado on the ground and an extremely dangerous situation unfolding. A traffic camera in the Omaha area caught the tornado. Another tornado warning was issued for Omaha, including downtown, and damage was confirmed in the region. Additional surveys will be conducted to determine the strength of tornadoes in Omaha. <div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1783961145100980348" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1783961145100980348"></div>Not only were there confirmed tornadoes in Nebraska, but numerous tornadoes also struck Iowa, impacting western and Central Iowa. Tornadoes Tear Through the Heartland Friday

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

The severe threat has lessened this evening and there is now a GENERAL risk for thunderstorms for the overnight hours and a low threat for severe due to the loss of daytime heating. An isolated storm will be possible, but there will be limited precipitation through the overnight hour for Texas and Louisiana.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/gggg-1714440061662.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>Flood Threat</h2>In addition to the severe weather, there is an ongoing flood threat. Many places in the Central and Southern Plains have already seen over 9" of rain in the past few days. This means the ground is already highly saturated in some spots, making it more likely to flood. Torrential rain fell overnight around the city of Groveton, TX. Flash Flood Emergency 30 Miles Outside of Lufkin Overnight

Snow piled up in the Rocky Mountains this weekend, with over two feet of snow reported in parts of Colorado! Even the Denver metro area saw accumulating snow Saturday morning.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1784356854233178450" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1784356854233178450"></div> Many mountainous areas from the Cascades to the Rockies reported heavy snow from mid-week into the weekend, with the Front Range of Colorado reported the highest totals thus far.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Screenshot 2024-04-28 062758-1714307296262.png">Moisture lingering behind the trough and afternoon heating will lead to a few more pop-up rain and snow showers on Sunday. Winter alerts are in effect for SE Wyoming's Snowy Range, where several inches of snow and gusty winds are expected.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/forecast-1714319083449.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Additional snowfall is only expected to top a few inches on Sunday but could create travel issues on mountain passes, including on I-70 and I-80.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/snow accumulation-1714319142786.jpg">Snow this late in the season is not unusual in the Colorado Rockies. In fact, even more snow is possible toward the end of the computing workweek. Denver has recorded measurable snow into late May - with mountain snow chances lingering even longer. This is great news for the handful of ski resorts that remain open, and hope to extend their season even further.

Late-Season Snow Dumps 2 Feet Across the Rockies

A critical fire risk is in place for west Texas, eastern Colorado, and New Mexico through the weekend as gusty winds and dry grasses and low humidity create a dangerous situation. If a spark were to start, these are the conditions where rapid, life-threatening fire growth would be possible. Humidity values will be in the teens, meaning there will be no moisture in our atmosphere to help taper fire growth.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/1-1714253426666.png">Gusty winds are anticipated on Sunday, especially through New Mexico and West Texas. Winds could gust up to 40 mph unlike Saturday where gusts reached near 60s mph in Southern New Mexico. If a flame starts, it will move as quickly as the winds, at about 40 mph. We can't stress enough how critical this weekend's fire risk is.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Baron 2-1714253811864.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>Drought conditions are extreme and exceptional for southern New Mexico, while most of the region is experiencing moderate drought. Critical Fire Risk in West Texas, New Mexico

It’s the soundtrack to the summer. Nature’s noisemakers are set to return in a big way this year as not one, but two sets of periodical cicadas will emerge in the Midwest and Southeast. It is the first time these two specific broods have surfaced together since 1803! This is the first time since 2015 that a 13 year cycle brood emerges at the same year as a 17 year brood.<div data-youtube-video=""><iframe width="640" height="480" allowfullscreen="false" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o5jJPrP5rfE" start="0"></iframe></div>The southern brood emerges every 13 years and is known as the Brood XIX, the largest brood in the U.S.. The Northern Illinois brood has a period of 17 years, making these two broods overlap uncommon. They will only overlap in central Illinois, where is expected to be the noisest!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Closer look at Illinois locations overlap.mp4_snapshot_00.01.232-1713196589008.jpg"><blockquote>Katie Dana, a researcher with the Illinois Natural History Survey who studies the cicadas says, “We have broods emerging across the U.S. almost every year, but we don’t often have broods emerging at the same time. Just like how birds have different songs, cicadas have different songs...we have over 3,000 different species of cicadas so we have so many different songs.”</blockquote>Periodical Cicadas are large, loud insects with bright red eyes. They live underground for years. Once the cicadas take to the skies, they will be in the air for about 3-4 weeks, mating before laying eggs and reburying themselves for another 13 or 17 years.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/04/Slow zoom east coast brood locations.mp4_snapshot_00.06.391-1713196589005.jpg">Depending on where you live, the double brood emergence could start as soon as April but will happen whenever the ground temperatures reach 64°.
